Frances Eleanor Price's Obituary
Frances Eleanor Price died Wednesday, November 19, 2014 in S.E. Portland leaving a legacy of dedication to hundreds of Oregon school children for over six decades.Frances was Born September 27, 1916 to Archie Greenlee and Ruth (Marvel) Greenlee near Dufur, Oregon. She graduated from Hillsboro High School and Oregon Normal School in Monmouth (WOSC) class of '36. That fall Miss Greenlee, as she was known, began her teaching career at a one-room schoolhouse with grades 1-12 in Upper Eight-Mile, Wasco County. Her salary was $75.00 a month $5.00 for janitorial work. In 1939 she married a fellow teacher, Louis Price, and became mother to his two little girls, Joan and Margaret. Mr. and Mrs. Price then taught in Wheeler, Grand Ronde, and Willamina. They took the first groups of school children to go tree planting after the Tillamook Burn. In 1946 the Prices moved to Elkton where Mrs. Price taught 6th grade and coached. Daughters, Ruth and Penny were born. In 1956 they moved to Glendale, Oregon, where Frances and Louis taught until retirement. After Louis died in 1982, Mrs. Price taught a year at Twin Wells Indian School, a Navajo Mission School in Arizona. She returned to Glendale and in "retirement" became even more active in 4-H, church, and community activities. She received many Honors for her 4-H work and traveled to Africa, Denmark, Norway and several states including Hawaii with 4-H sponsorship. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, OEA , NEA, and a 50yr. member of Rebekah's IOOF. At age 73 she medaled in race walking in the Senior Olympics. Frances received EMT training and helped drive the Glendale ambulance for several years. Her last 2 and a half yrs. in Glendale she wrote a monthly newspaper column which ran in The South County News titled Flora and Fauna by Frances, wherein she combined her love of nature and poetry writing. In 2003 she was recognized for 50 years of 4-H leadership. That same year she was taken by ambulance to OHSU in Portland for surgery after an accident and remained in Portland near daughters. She was preceded in death by her sister Gladys Barclay. She is survived by her daughters, Joan Larsen, Margaret(Peg) Moore, Ruth Stellmon, and Penny Price Lucas; grandchildren- John Larsen, Chris Larsen, Nancy Stephan, Janice Chatfield, Elizabeth Esguerra, Michael Moore, Charlie and Erin Stellmon; thirteen great grandchildren and one great- great grandchild. A Celebration of Life service and reception will be at the Olivet Presbyterian Church in Glendale, OR 97442 , Friday, November 28th at 1:00 pm after a 12:30 graveside service.
