Tomislav (Thomas) Matic's Obituary
Tomislav Matic age 82 passed away on July 8, 2016 at 6:35pm at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland, Oregon. From his birth on March 15, 1934 in Hercegovina/Crveni Grm, to his death on Friday he loved his family dearly, all his family in Croatia, politics, world news and professional boxing. Especially Muhammad Ali. Tom was born in his mother's home (Anica Matic) and had to fight and work hard for everything. In 1958 Tom left Hercegovina Crveni Grm with 3 of his closest friends. The plan to leave wasn't easy and very dangerous. They escaped to Italy and from Italy to the United States. That magic year was 1962. In 1963 he married the love of his life Mila Sutalo. They met in Chicago at a Croatian picnic. From there (3) children arose. (Sons)Tom Jr, Tony and (Daughter) Milena.
Tom was famous for his work ethic and his ability to fix just about anything. He was determined to be a success in the United States. Tom attended night school to learn English and to get his journey man's license to become a master welder. Tom and Mildred lived many years in Chicago Illinois before settling finally in Portland, Oregon on August 11th, 1979.
Tom Matic Sr. is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years Mildred, (Daughter) Milena(Sons) Tom Jr. Tony and wife Giovanna and (Granddaughter) Gabriella.
On Wednesday July 13, a wake will be held at Holman-Hankins-Bowker & Waud from 2PM to 6PM. The next day, a Requiem Mass will be said for Tom on Thursday, July 14, 2016 @ 11:00AM at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. The recitation of the Rosary will be at church just before Mass at 10:30AM. Following the Mass, a committal service will take place at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery in Happy Valley, Oregon.
