Sylvia Jean Casebeer's Obituary
Sylvia Jean CasebeerAugust 23, 1930 - December 10, 2014Sylvia Jean was born to Arne and Gudny Guthormsen on August 23, 1930 in Seattle, Washington. She passed away on December 10, 2014 in Portland, Oregon after several years with Alzheimer's.Sylvia grew up in Seattle with her sister Marilyn. She graduated from Roosevelt High school in 1948, and from Seattle Pacific College in 1953 with a BS in Nursing. She liked to sing and was a part of the choir in High School. She also participated in music by playing the piano for various group functions. After her training at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, she worked there for a while, and eventually she began to work in a local nursing home as a nurse. She loved to help people and take care of them. It was a challenge at times, but Sylvia always wanted the best for her patients. She married David Floyd Casebeer on October 3, 1958 in Seattle, Washington and they soon started a family. In time, with five children in tow, she and Dave moved to Esperanza, British Columbia, Canada to do Christian missionary work as a nurse at a small hospital serving the local Nootka Indian Tribes of the area. After serving two years they moved back to Seattle, and later moved the family to Oregon, settling in the Oregon City area where the family attended the local schools and worshipped at Oregon City Evangelical Church. Sylvia continued her work as a nurse in area nursing homes, caring for the residents there. Her desire to care for others was evident even in her later years. While having her own struggle with Alzheimer's she was often seen caring for and comforting the other residents of the memory care facility she lived at. She enjoyed nature and the outdoors, and liked to travel. She also enjoyed harassing her family as the subjects of her numerous pictures, which we are now so very grateful for. Her photos were filled with shots of friends and family, sometimes literally in the process of eating the delicious meals she made for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Pets, birds, insects, flowers and outdoor scenery were also favorite subjects. She employed the "diagonal orientation" for many pictures, which we lovingly teased her about as being her specialty. She is survived by her sister Marilyn Barish; son Scott (Rachel) Casebeer; son Greg Casebeer; son Jon (Kelly) Casebeer; daughter Karen Carson; son Tim (Brenda) Casebeer. Her grandchildren include Tristan Casebeer, Devin Casebeer, Nicholas (Heather) Casebeer, Kevin (Nikki) Casebeer, Kayla Carson, and Kale Carson. Her great grandchildren are Clara Casebeer and Staci Casebeer. She was preceeded in death by her husband David. There will be a Memorial service and reception at Oregon City Evangelical Church, 1024 Linn Avenue, Oregon City ,Oregon on Saturday , January 24 at 1:30 in the afternoon.
