Stanley Alfonso Gerkman's Obituary
Stanley Alfonso Gerkman was born April 1, 1922, in Oregon City and passed away peacefully January 5, 2017. He was one of eight children born to James and Mary Gerkman. His parents and siblings: James, Rose(Planton), Cecilia (Blais), Ludwig, Frank, Ernest, and Jennie(Schnack), all predeceased him. He was a lifelong bachelor, and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Stanley attended McLoughlin Institute, and Oregon City High School. He worked for Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill, but left to join the Navy in September of 1942. He served in the maintenance and repair of gunnery equipment department. He was stationed in Texas and the Galapagos Islands. He was very proud of the fact that his ship crossed the equator on October 29, 1945. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on January 26, 1946. (His mother's birthday). He returned to work for Crown Zellerbach for the next thirty nine years. Stanley was a lifelong member of st. John The Apostle Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus for sixty-two and one half years. He was also a long time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved to garden and travel and was a caregiver to family members in need of help.
There will be a rosary for Stanley at 10:30 am on Friday, January 13th at St John The Apostle Catholic Church in Oregon City followed by Mass at 11:00 am. He will be buried in st John's Cemetery immediately following Mass.
