Martin John Hines' Obituary
Martin John Hines
Aug. 26, 1951-April 6, 2026
Martin John Hines passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 6, 2026, at his home in Oregon City, Oregon. He lived a big life filled with love, loyalty and laughter, and he will be deeply missed.
Born in Manchester, England, John went by his middle name with family and friends. After his family immigrated to the United States in 1965, John graduated from Ashwaubenon High School in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, where he met his future wife, Phyllis, and earned a bachelor’s degree. He later earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Portland.
Married in Minnesota in 1972, John and Phyllis moved to Oregon in 1977 before welcoming their two sons. The family spent time in Wilsonville, West Linn and Oregon City. While John spent a long career as a packaging engineer, his life was defined by his personal interests. John was a dedicated father and grandfather who coached his sons’ sports teams, cheered on his grandson’s music recitals, playfully teased his friends, dominated trivia games, oversaw backyard barbecues, chatted up the neighbors on his daily walks, and dedicated time and energy to various charities supporting those in need.
John was a lifelong fan of his two hometown football teams, Manchester United and the Green Bay Packers, and would watch just about any sports competition at any time. In retirement, he discovered a love for cruising that took him to the Arctic Circle, through the Panama Canal and to many other exotic locations.
John is survived by his wife, Phyllis; sons Michael (Mona) and Derek (Jenn); grandson Bishop; brother Mark (Anna); and sister Deb (Gary) Blazek. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Martin and Dorothy, and sister, Ann Marie, who died as a child but has always been in the hearts of family.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends gifts to John’s preferred charities, Mercy Corps and Oregon Food Bank.
