Malcolm Leroy (Mac) Hazel Jr Obituary.
Malcolm Leroy (Mac) Hazel Jr., 93, of Gladstone, Oregon, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 23, 2025, at Willamette Falls Medical Center in Oregon City, Oregon.
Born December 10, 1931, in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of Malcolm Leroy, Sr., and Leila Hazel, he graduated from Scotch Plains High School in 1949, was drafted into military service from 1952 to 1954, and completed his Wooster College, Ohio, education in 1957.
His newspaper sports writing career spanned many states from 1958 to 1965 before he turned his attention to the pastorate. He graduated from Northwest Christian College (Eugene, Oregon) in 1967; then from Western Conservative Baptist Seminary in 1974 (Portland, Oregon), with his Master's of Divinity degree.
He was a member of Gladstone Christian Church (Gladstone, Oregon), and a retired pastor of Clackamas Christian Church (Clackamas, Oregon) and Concord Christian Church (Milwaukie, Oregon).
For many years, he could be seen in area restaurants and coffee shops enjoying his meals, ministering to the wait staff and other patrons, writing and leaving them his custom note cards.
Mac was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Kathleen Kelley Hazel. Four step-children and their spouses survive him: Nancy Kelley Hadley of Oregon City, Oregon; Dennis Kelley (Sharon) of Boise, Idaho; Larry Kelley (Susan) of Boise, Idaho; and Judy Kelley Illingworth of Baltimore, Maryland; five grandchildren: Scott Hadley, Joshua Hadley (Amber), Amy Kelley, Heidi Kelley, Shannon Mathews; one great granddaughter, Makenna Mathews: one sister, Leila Rudy (Wooster, Ohio), one brother, Geoffrey Hazel (Enetai, Washington), two nephews, two nieces and many other family members who remember him fondly.
The service will take place Thursday, April 17, 2:00 pm, at Gladstone Christian Church, 305 E. Dartmouth St., Gladstone, Oregon 97027. Reception to follow.
He will be buried in Cloverdale Cemetery, Boise, Idaho, alongside his bride.
