Joan Terry Miller's Obituary
On November 1, Joan T. Miller passed away. She was 84 years old. She leaves behind two sisters, Linda and Kathleen, and a brother, James. She had three children, Heather, Heidi, John; four grandchildren, Daniel, Austin, Dylan, and Cody; three great grandchildren, Mydnite, Dixie, and Cheyanne and two more on the way; and one great-great grandchild born in October 2024.
Born in Seattle, Washington to Robert and Blanche (Merci) Boyle, she was the oldest daughter of six children from that marriage. She had four additional half-siblings, one older brother, Bobby, and younger brother, Kevin, and sister, Kathleen.
She spent part of her childhood in Lander, Wyoming but graduated from Idaho Falls Senior High School in 1958. At 20, she met and married Jon Harmon Poggi and had a daughter, Heather. She divorced him in 1962 and married John Russell Miller in November 1963. She had two children, Heidi and John, with John Miller.
Joan was a pioneer in many ways. She was one of the first women to be “on the line” at the Reynolds Metal Aluminum company in Troutdale, Oregon. While at Reynolds, she was an active union member for the AFL/CIO. When that plant was downsized, she got her small appliance repair certification and worked for Sears Repair Service for a year. She hired on at Freightliner where she put all the wiring in the big rig cabs and became a member of Machinists Union Local 1003. She retired from Freightliner in the early 1990s but remained active in the union as the women’s representative to many national conventions. Her tireless support of the union provided opportunities to meet and talk with people like Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), Hillary Clinton and other noted politicians. She always promoted taking care of working families.
Energetic, adventurous, caring, loving, curious, and always learning are just a few traits of this lovely woman. She is sorely missed.
