October 30, 1928 – May 21, 2024. – James Nicholas (Jim) Promitas was born October 30, 1928 born in Butteville, Oregon and died on May 21, 2024 at the age of 95 in his home in Oregon City. He had a strong faith in Jesus Christ for salvation and forgiveness.
Jim joined the Merchant Marines early in 1946 post-WWII and served 2 years in the Pacific. He then joined the Marines where he reached the rank of Sergeant during the Korean War. He was extremely proud of his service to his country and often referred to it as the best period of his life. He worked many jobs during his lifetime including work as a postal carrier and a bottler for Blitz-Weinhard for nearly 30 years. He finished his work life giving samples of food to customers at Costco at the age of 92. He claimed it was the perfect job for him because it gave him the opportunity to talk with so many people.
Jim was an active member of Grandview Baptist Church in Oregon City. He found great joy helping build the church and was married there while it was still under construction. His favorite activity was spending time with his beloved wife of 30 years, Audrey Promitas, who left this earth 8 months earlier. He is survived by 4 of his 5 children, Pamela Belgarde, Michael Promitas, Mark Promitas and Jeffrey Promitas. His firstborn son died and went to be with the Lord 8 years before him. Jim left a legacy of 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, along with a multitude of friends.
His favorite Bible verse was John 3:16, which served as a reminder to him that none are perfect, but all are given an opportunity for eternal life through Jesus Christ, by having faith in his death and resurrection.
Jim always finished a conversation with his loved ones with an admonishment to “keep in prayer”.
A memorial service at Grandview Baptist Church will be held June 18th at 11:00 am.
A private graveside military service will be held June 18th at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon, as a tribute to a life marked by honor, service and unwavering devotion to his family and country.
