Henry Gilbert Reeves' Obituary
Hank Reeves passed away peacefully on March 9, 2014, at Kaiser Hospital, Sunnyside, after suffering a massive stroke at home on Friday, March 7th . Hank was born on September 13, 1933, in Denver, CO, to George and Harriet Smith-Reeves. The family moved to Portland, Oregon, in the late '30s. Hank graduated from Dufur High School, near The Dalles, in 1951, worked for the forest service, and then joined the Navy in 1956. Hank married the love of his life, Sally Matschiner. They met at Providence Hospital where both were employed. After graduating from x-ray technician school, he worked at Portland Osteopathic Hospital in SE Portland, where the head surgeon, John Scanlon, offered to sponsor him at an osteopathic medical school in the Midwest. Hank declined because he and Sally had just purchased a house and their son, Terry, was a newborn baby. Hank and Sally then purchased a dry cleaning business. After selling the business, Hank worked for Rose City Transit (now Trimet); at the same time, he worked as a Clackamas County reserve officer. Daughter, Carol, was a welcome addition to their family at this time. In 1969, Hank joined the Clackamas County sheriff's department as a fulltime deputy and became a detective in 1974 until his retirement in 1989. Life continued to be busy in retirement for Hank and Sally as they traveled mostly in the western United States spending time with their two children and four much-loved grandchildren. Attending church at St. John the Apostle and volunteering at the parish school occupied a lot of their "leisurely retirement," as did working at Meals on Wheels, St. Vincent de Paul, and Birthright. Hank is affectionately known to hundreds of St. John the Apostle Catholic School students as "Grandpa Hank." Hank's funeral Mass was held at St. John's on Monday, March 17th. In lieu of flowers, Hank and Sally ask that donations be made in Hank's name to St. John the Apostle School, Attention: Mike Adams. Internment will be at Willamette National Cemetery on Thursday, March 20th, at noon.
