George Gerard Krummenacker's Obituary
Lieutenant Colonel George Gerard Krummenacker, 74 years old, passed away peacefully on November 11th at 11am, 2016, at his home in Gladstone Oregon.
He was born February 13, 1942, in Jamaica, Queens, New York, to George Albert Krummenacker and Helen Marie Ayers. He attended Pennsylvania Military College in Chester, Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. While at PMC he was a member of Pershing Rifles Company Q-5 Drill Team, which competed in more than twenty-three major tournaments and was awarded some forty-eight trophies, including the title National Champions. His team performed at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. Upon graduation from PMC he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army and sent to Officers' Basic Course in Air Defense Artillery at Fort Bliss, Texas, then to the 32nd Air Defense Artillery Command in Germany.
While stationed in Germany, he met and married Antoinette (Toni) Maes of Portland, Oregon. They were married in Kaiserslautern, Germany, in 1967. In December of 1967, he was assigned to Headquarters US Army Vietnam. In Vietnam he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was also instrumental in directing funding for the Hale Koa Military Hotel in Oahu. Returning to Oregon in 1969, he attended Portland State University earning a Master's Degree in Business Administration. In 1971, he began a civilian career with the US Treasury Department - eventually working to the positon of an appeals officer with the Internal Revenue Service from where he retired.
Continuing his military career 1973, George entered the Army Reserve and was assigned to 104th Division (TRN) at Vancouver Barracks. George was promoted to Major in 1975 and later to Lieutenant Colonel and served as the Adjutant General of the Division. George later was assigned to the 124th ARCOM, also at Vancouver Barracks. For many years he taught Command and General Staff courses to hundreds of students from the Army Reserves and National Guard.
After retiring, he made his home in Gladstone with his wife and two sons, Paul and John. He spent his retirement with friends, gardening, traveling and golfing. During his 12 years of retirement, a great deal of his time and energy was devoted to his five grandchildren. He shared with them his passion for sports, bike riding, and golf.
He is survived by his wife Toni, sons Paul (Michelle), John (Ahnyah), five grandchildren - Nick, Abby, Erik, Charlotte, Mary and his sister Helen (Richard) Steffans of New Paltz, New York and numerous extended family members in the Greater Portland Area and across the US and the world.
A Rosary will be held Saturday, November 19th at 12:30 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Milwaukie and immediately followed by a funeral mass. A reception will follow at the Monarch Hotel at 2 p.m. Private inurnment will be at Willamette National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to ALS research or projects related to ALS.
