Eric George Kent's Obituary
Eric George Kent (98) born in Berwyn, Illinois, passed away peacefully on July 31st, 2023 in Portland, Oregon. He was in the company of his youngest daughter who held his hand as they listened to his favorite classical music.
Eric had many accomplishments in life, he held a PhD in Psychology, managed clinics, was a psychology professor, had a private practice, was a veteran of the Army Air Force (WWII), held certification as a scuba diver, was a hunter, fisherman, gardener, poet, artist and cook. To top that all off he was a lover of gin martinis with white vermouth and a stuffed olive. If you wanted to find him on a summer evening one does not need to search any further than following the aroma of a good cigar to find him sipping martinis out on his porch.
As a child of parents who immigrated from Austria he was encouraged to take full advantage of what America has to offer. He explored, achieved, and learned. In fact, he never stopped learning- Eric loved to learn. He continued studying psychology, writing poetry, and teaching himself how to play the piano all the way into his last days.
He was a man who loved his children deeply, wanting them to find the same fullness and satisfaction in life he had found.
Not only was he a renaissance man, he also loved to make people laugh. He could be found cracking jokes with friends, residents and care staff at his retirement home. Eric loved people. His calling was to help people. As a psychologist he touched many lives, and found great pleasure in his career and in passing on his wisdom to others.
Eric was predeceased by his son Ian, and survived by his son Graydon, daughters Delia and Carlin, and granddaughter Julie.
Lastly, we would like to share with you a written note left by Eric to be read at the time of his passing: “Please understand that whatever form death takes I have led a full- most satisfying life (my children, my original family, my profession, love of nature) I am at peace. I love you. I will always be in your heart, as you have been in mine.”
His children will be going to dinner to celebrate their father with a gin martini, and invite you to do the same.
