Charles Floyd Barclay's Obituary
Charles Floyd Barclay was born August 21,1943, at Emanuel Hospital in Portland,
Oregon. He passed away this July 23, 2024, 12:12pm at Providence St. Vincent’s
Hospital in Portland, Oregon.
Growing up in North Portland, in the early days, he was learning aside his father, the
trade of hardwood floor laying and any construction tips he could pick up from him. This
struck an interest in him to attend a tradesman high school. After graduating from
Benson Polytechnic High School, he went on to work for a few cabinet making places.
Soon to launch his career as a general contractor. He was a natural at finding ways to
fix or create. Anyone who has ever had the opportunity to work with him, or see his work
would all say that nothing, he put his hands on would be free from his meticulous
precision and foresight. He was indeed a fine craftsman.
He not only put his hands into life, but his heart along with it. As a teenager in high
school, he joined the sea scouts learning the ways of tending a ship, service, and
survival at sea. Frequently going on fishing and hunting trips with his family as a boy to
the very end. Oh, the stories of those adventures! He enjoyed the outdoors and had
acquired the survival skills to go along with it. With this big heart of his, he joined
various groups to help the communities he lived nearby. To name just a few. The St
John’s Jaycees, when he lived in St. John’s of North Portland. When he moved up to
Benton City Washington, to start and run an apple orchard, (yes, and orchard, he taught
himself farming too!) he was encouraged because he’s Charlie, to help the nearby city
of Kennewick. He would volunteer when he could, to help keep the peace. So much so,
they deputized him as a volunteer recruit. He then moved to Oakridge Oregon, and, as
an 80-year-old man, he was still just a phone call away to his neighbors, family, and
family of friends. Helping out with anything! A ride home, a ride to the hospital, stuck, or
lost. Of course, he’d be there to help with just about any construction project you had.
He was even handy at small car repairs. A real “Jack of all Trades.” He would say, “I’m
on my way.” If he really could not make it to you, he would walk you through how to fix it
yourself.
