Alice Marie (Strickland) Stewart's Obituary
The world was a little kinder for having Alice Marie Strickland in it. She was born on October 5, 1933, in Crawford, Colorado, to Alice and Vinton Strickland. Everyone called her Marie. She grew up during the Great Depression, and the resourcefulness she learned in those early years stayed with her for the rest of her life. She graduated from high school in Ridgway, Colorado.
Marie married John Helmick in 1952, and together they raised four sons: Mickey Helmick (Henrietta, NY), Dennis Helmick (deceased), Kelly Helmick (Oregon City, OR), and Christopher Helmick (Portland, OR). In 1967, she married Charles Stewart, and they had a son, Thomas Stewart (Portland, OR).
She is survived by her siblings, Patti Bettors (Stayton, OR) and Tim Strickland (Montrose, CO); her seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Rosie Janes of Durango, Colorado, her best friend of 80 years, will remember her fondly.
Marie loved a good story, and she had an eye for beauty—in her garden, in a drawing, in a song. People who heard her sing didn't forget it. She never missed a birthday. Family and friends will remember her creativity, her warmth, and the quiet strength she carried through everything.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Helmick; her husband, Charles Stewart; and her son, Dennis Helmick.
