Wanda Johnson Smith Wanda was born February 13, 1926, in Hagarville, Arkansas, the daughter of Teman and Jewel Johnson. She died March 1, 2017, just weeks past her 91st birthday. Wanda was raised primarily in Antlers, Oklahoma. During WWII, Wanda worked as a welding inspector in the shipyard at Long Beach, California, then returned to Oklahoma, where she attended Oklahoma Baptist University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics. While at OBU, Wanda met the love of her life, Bob Smith. Wanda and Bob married August 12, 1948, and were the proud parents of three children: Robert David, Jaime Lea, and Richard Joseph. In 1956, Bob accepted a job as a county agent in Clackamas County and he and Wanda moved their growing young family to Oregon City. Wanda spent her working life as an elementary school teacher, mostly in the Reedville School District and mostly teaching first grade. She truly enjoyed teaching and strived to inspire intellectual curiosity and a love of learning for each and every one of her students. The family lived in a variety of places, including Oregon City; Davis, California; Sousse, Tunisia; The Dalles and, finally, Hillsboro. Wanda and Bob returned to Tunisia for the last five years of their working life, during which time they traveled extensively. They retired to Lake Oswego in 1988. In retirement, Wanda and Bob combined their desire to serve others with their love of travel by volunteering with Volunteers for Overseas Cooperative Assistance, traveling to and educating farmers in Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Albania, Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, and Bolivia. Wanda and Bob were also long-time members of Rolling Hills Community Church, where they were active in the Winsome Warriors Bible study group. Wanda's life was guided by her Christian faith. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends, neighbors, and church community. Wanda is survived by her children, David (Betty), Jaime (Brian Erickson), and Richard (Wiki). She also leaves behind six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. At Wanda's request, no service will be held. Memorial contributions may be made in Wanda's name to Rolling Hills Community Church, Union Gospel Mission or Mercy Corps.
