Jose Castro Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Jose Castro, founder and owner of Solo Special Edition in Woodburn since 1984, died unexpectedly yet peacefully, surrounded by family, on November 6, 2017 due to a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 57. Jose was born on March 19, 1960 in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico to Jose Sr. and Sebastiana Castro. He was child number 6 and the first boy out of 12 children. He graduated from Woodburn High School in 1980, where he met his future wife, Diane Dulwick. He married his high school sweetheart at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mt. Angel, Oregon on August 25, 1990. The couple later welcomed two children into their home, Jake and Elizabeth, and Jose began teaching them morals and values, how to be good people, how to love everyone, and how to just be happy. He proudly supported them in all of their endeavors throughout their youth, especially all of their combined years of sporting events where he would frequently be seen videotaping all the action. His children remember him as a humorous, artistic, kind, and driven father who encouraged them to pursue their dreams. Jose was an active and dedicated member of St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church. In 1980 at the early age of 20, he lost his own dad and assumed the father figure role by helping his widowed mother and the rest of his siblings not only emotionally, but financially as well. He always unconditionally helped his family members. He never complained about the responsibilities that he had assumed and he didn't ask for much in return. He always made sure the rest of the family was very well taken care of. He was very giving and knew the definition of family. To this day, he never stopped helping his mother with anything that she needed. She was one of his priorities in life. In 1984 Jose utilized his artistic talents to start up Solo Special Edition, a silk screening, embroidery and multimedia design business in Woodburn, Oregon. Solo's humble beginnings were out of the garage of his home. He also hosted his own television show, Positivo TV, focusing on all the good in life. He is a former member of the Woodburn Kiwanis Club, the Woodburn Downtown Association and was the 1992 recipient of the Woodburn Junior First Citizen award. Jose was always the practical joker. Without a doubt, the most wonderful thing about Jose was his humor; especially at the most inopportune times. Jose's one liners deserve their very own book. His ability to come up with quick-witted responses never ceased to amaze those around him. Even when his jokes were bad Jose could always make you laugh. He could always cheer you up, and he had a beautiful way of making you see that you should never take life too seriously. The generosity he expressed with his time and possessions matched his generous spirit. Jose was a giver. He literally gave the clothes off his back so often that family members had to stop complimenting his attire to avoid Jose gifting it to them, then and there. Jose was a generous, witty, dedicated individual who loved his family and who was passionate about changing the world one person at a time. Jose truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures: chatting, laughing, eating, drinking coke, and spending time with family and friends. Jose had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. I am certain that many people will miss having Jose call them by their special nickname; they will miss the way he lit up a room when he entered it, his voice and deep belly laughs. He nourished people around him with love, laughter, and art. Jose was an amazing husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend who will be dearly missed by his family and friends forever; may he rest in peace. Jose is survived by his wife of 27 years, Diane; mother, Sebastiana; children, Jake and Elizabeth; siblings, Casilda, Mafalda, Ana, Loreto, Paul, Luisa, Julia, Maria Elena, Everardo and Veneranda, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Jose Sr., and oldest sister, Cristina. Recitation of the rosary is at 6:00 p.m. Friday, November 10 at Holman-Hankins-Bowker & Waud Funeral Service, 715 7th Street, Oregon City, OR. Recitation of the rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on November 11 at St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church, 18211 S. Henrici Road, Oregon City. A committal will follow at 3:00 p.m. at St. Luke Cemetery, 1679 N Front Street, Woodburn, Oregon. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jose's life.
