December 20, 1936 – December 27, 2018
Frederick George Rice passed away peacefully during the night on December 27, 2018. Fortunately for his loving family, they were able to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with him one last time to enjoy his wonderful sense of humor, love and laughter.
Fred was born in Portland Oregon, on December 20, 1936 to Frank and Rose Rice. His family, including his younger brother Don, moved to Canby where he spent his formative years. An excellent wrestler and football player in high school, he used his charm and personality to form many lifelong friendships. After he graduated from Canby HS in 1954, he briefly attended Gonzaga University. He returned to Canby and married Patricia Schiel in 1957. They bought their first home and settled in the wonderful growing suburb of Gladstone, Oregon, starting their family with Pam, Greg and Rich. Fred became a fixture in Gladstone in the 60’s and early 70’s with his service to the community. He was a City Councilman, Police Commissioner, Water Commissioner, a Glad Dad and a member of the Lions Club. Service defined Fred. During this period he built a thriving Allstate insurance business with his partners, Dave Graham and Ed Perry, in Milwaukie, Oregon. In 1978 Fred married his second wife Colleen Sorenson. They enjoyed their years together traveling, gardening, and most certainly spending time supporting the activities of their grandchildren and more recently, great grandchildren. Fred’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren looked at him as a larger than life figure sharing his love and encouragement. Fred’s smile and hugs would brighten everyone's day.
Fred is survived by his wife of 40 years Colleen, his three children Pam Rice McClung (Mike), Greg, Rich (Tara) and four stepchildren Mike (Denise), Mark (Jana), Stephanie and Todd (Christine), with 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
