Patrick William Waud

May 26, 1944 ~ April 6, 2018 (age 73)

Patrick William Waud passed away peacefully in his Oregon City home on Friday, April 6, 2018. Pat was born on May 26, 1944 in Portland, Oregon to Orrin Arthur Waud and Lewanna Francis McCoy. Pat is the fourth of six children: Thomas (wife, Betty), Gerald (wife, Beverly), Marta, Lewanna, and Christopher (wife, Leanne). Pat is survived by his wife of 51 years, Suzan Francine (Coffen), son Timothy (wife, Jill), daughter Traci, son Tyler, granddaughter Abigail, and his extended family Ron Rohde (wife, Asia) of Oregon City.

Pat was raised in Tillamook. He attended Sacred Heart Grade School and graduated from Tillamook Catholic High School in 1962. He was a four-year letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. Following high school, he attended community college in Washington State. Pat and Sue were married on October 11, 1966 and moved to San Francisco, California to attend mortuary science school.

In 1967, Pat graduated from San Francisco Mortuary College with a degree in Mortuary Science. Early in 1968, he passed the Mortuary and Cemetery State Board Exam and became a licensed funeral service practitioner and embalmer in the State of Oregon. Pat first began his career working at Holman’s Funeral Service in Portland and then at Fisher Funeral Home in Albany.

In 1971, Pat became a co-owner of Holman-Hankins and Rilance Funeral Home in Oregon City. Pat and Harold Bowker incorporated the business and changed the name to Holman-Hankins-Bowker & Waud Funeral Service. In 1975, Pat and his partner purchased Cochran’s Sunset Chapel in Gladstone. That same year, younger brother Chris began his career working with Pat and Harold. Pat, Chris, and Harold continued to operate both funeral homes until Harold retired in 1982. Pat continued to manage the funeral home until his passing.

Pat was an active member of the Oregon City/West Linn Rotary Club for several years having served as President from 1975-1976. In 1993, Pat served as President of the Oregon Funeral Directors Association. He was also a member of National Selected Morticians for over 30 years. In 1998, both Pat and Sue Waud were honored as “Citizens of the Year” in the Oregon City community.

Pat was very active in the Oregon City community. He was a member of the Oregon City Elk’s Club and Oregon City/West Linn Rotary Club, attended St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, and served on the Oregon City Police Chiefs Advisory Council, as well as the St. John’s Cemetery board. Pat and Sue were co-chairs of the “Where Better Health Begins” initiative which became the Willamette Falls Hospital Community Center located in Oregon City.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Oregon City on Tuesday, April 17, at 11:00 AM. Entombment will be at Mt. View Cemetery in Oregon City immediately following mass. A wake will be held at the Oregon City Elk’s Club Grand Ballroom from 1:00-6:00 PM.
